Bag Valve Masks

A bag valve mask (BVM), also known as an Ambu bag, is designed to administer oxygen therapy to patients who are not breathing or are going into respiratory arrest. It’s a good alternative to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and helps prevent cross-contamination. The components of a BVM typically include a face mask, reservoir bag, PEEP valve, self-inflating bag and an oxygen tube. It can either be used with or without an oxygen cylinder. 

By pressing the face mask over the patient’s face and manually pumping the self-inflating bag, you help force air into the lungs. It’s important that the face mask is held tightly over the patient’s nose and mouth to prevent air from escaping. An airway adjunct should also be used in conjunction with a BVM so that the tongue doesn’t block the airway and force air into the esophagus or stomach instead.
